What shortens membrane life
The main factors are poor screening (ragging and abrasion), running at high flux for long periods, aggressive or frequent chemical cleaning, temperature and pH outside limits, and mechanical stress from flexing. Industrial feeds with oils, solvents or scale-forming minerals can also age membranes faster.

Signs a membrane is near end of life
Recovery cleans restore less permeability each time, permeate quality starts to drift, sheets show brittleness, discoloration or blisters, and the plant needs more membrane area to hit the same flow. Track permeability after each recovery clean to build a clear trend.
Extending life
- Size flux conservatively; Zyramic's long-life guidance for Swing is around 9 gfd (15 LMH)
- Keep screens tight and maintained
- Clean at the lowest effective strength and frequency
- Avoid back-pressure events
- Inspect regularly and replace damaged sections early
Zyramic's thick, roughly 250-micron membranes and strong wide membrane welds are intended for robust service, and smaller sheets mean less wear and tear from flexing. When replacement is due, we offer flat-sheet replacements and cartridge swaps.
Worked sizing example
Take a 317,006 gpd (1,200 m³/day) plant planning its next membrane replacement:
| Item | US | Metric | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average flow | 317,006 gpd | 1,200 m³/day | about 220 gpm (50,000 L/h) |
| Design flux (gross) | 8.8 gfd | 15 LMH | Zyramic design guidance |
| Derate for relaxation and cleaning | ~20% | ~20% | |
| Net flux | ~7.1 gfd | ~12 LMH | |
| Membrane area needed | ~44,850 ft² | ~4,167 m² | average flow ÷ net flux |
| Swing-8 cartridges | ~334 | ~334 | 135 ft² (12.5 m²) each |
| Peak factor | ~2.0 | ~2.0 | |
| Peak flow | ~634,013 gpd | ~2,400 m³/day | extra area, short-term higher flux, or equalization |
This is an illustration only; a real design also checks temperature, MLSS, redundancy and the cleaning schedule.
Tips for a smooth project
- Look for the root cause before increasing cleaning strength
- Use temperature-corrected permeability when judging membranes
- Check screens for bypasses after storms
- Plan replacements ahead of permit deadlines
Next step
Membrane issues are easiest to resolve early. Send your trend data, cleaning records and a few photos, and we will give you our read on whether to focus on pretreatment, biology, operation or the membranes themselves, and a sensible next step, whether that is a change in procedure, a partial replacement or interim capacity.
Sizing considerations
To give a useful recommendation we usually need:
- Installation date and membrane type
- Recovery-clean permeability history
- Average operating flux
- Cleaning chemicals and frequency
- Screening details

Why engineers look at Zyramic flat-sheet modules
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Smaller sheets, less wear and tear | each sheet flexes less in service, and a damaged unit affects less area. |
| Strong wide membrane welds | designed to resist delamination over the membrane's life. |
| Thick, robust membrane | about 250 microns including support. |
| Assembled in Poughkeepsie, NY | of domestic and imported components. In our Poughkeepsie shop we cut and weld membrane sheets to plates, build module frames and assemble complete modules. For funded projects, tell us your domestic-content requirements and we'll review what we can document. |
| Buy, rent or replace | new modules, rentals and pilots for US projects, and replacement membranes that fit many existing cassettes. |
Performance and life depend on pretreatment, design flux and operation; flux figures are Zyramic design guidance, sized to each project.
Frequently asked questions
What's a typical MBR membrane life?
Many plants plan for a multi-year replacement cycle, but it varies widely. Because conditions drive life, we size for your plant rather than quote a single figure.
Is there a warranty?
Yes, Zyramic modules carry a written warranty; see Resources for the terms.
Can I replace only part of the membranes?
Yes. Swing cartridges and individual plates can be replaced in sections.
How do I plan replacement budgets?
Track permeability decline and plan ahead; we can quote replacements early so you have numbers.
Does storage affect life?
Membranes that must stay wet can be damaged if they dry out. Swing sheets are permanently wetted and can be stored dry.
Is it worth replacing membranes early?
Sometimes. If old membranes force high cleaning frequency and energy use, early replacement can make economic sense.
