Wastewater treatment for First Nations and remote communities

Remote communities need treatment that local operators can run through long winters, with parts that are easy to stock and ship. Membrane bioreactors can provide reliable effluent if the design keeps maintenance simple.

Design priorities

Cold mixed liquor sets the flux design. Access may be by winter road or air, so components should be durable and spares should be on hand. Operator turnover is a common challenge, so clear procedures, simple cleaning routines and remote support matter as much as equipment.

Swing MBR module render, single section
A Swing module: standard cartridges sized to your flow, with room to add more as demand grows. See the Swing MBR page.

Membranes built for serviceability

Swing cartridges can be lifted and replaced by a small crew without draining the tank, and they store dry, which suits a spare parts shelf in a community garage. Our membranes are about 250 microns thick, with strong wide membrane welds designed to resist delamination, chosen for robust service.

Working together

We support community engineers, technical service organizations and operators with sizing, documentation and training material. See also Canadian projects and package plants.

What operators look for

Operators at a community usually want the same things: effluent that consistently meets discharge or reuse limits, solids separation that does not depend on how well sludge settles, and predictable sewer charges. The feed usually carries domestic sewage, sometimes with infiltration, and the system has to cope with small operator teams, remote access and cold winters. With membranes, they also look for durable sheets, easy inspection and replacement on a schedule they can plan.

  • Consistent, permit-ready effluent
  • Manageable cleaning routines
  • Planned, predictable membrane replacement
  • A compact footprint

How flat-sheet MBR can help

A membrane bioreactor replaces the clarifier with a physical barrier, so effluent quality depends far less on how well the sludge settles. That can make a community system more forgiving of small operator teams, remote access and cold winters. Flat-sheet modules are generally easy to inspect, clean in place and handle without special tools.

Zyramic modules are built around three durability choices. Smaller membrane sheets flex less in service, which can mean less wear, and a damaged sheet takes less area out of service. Strong wide membrane welds are designed to resist delamination. A thick membrane, about 250 microns including support, is meant to stand up to solids and handling. Actual life and flux depend on pretreatment, design and operation, so we size each project individually.

More questions owners ask

Is an MBR hard to run at a community?

Most operators find a well-designed MBR manageable with routine checks and periodic cleaning. Good screening and equalization upstream make the biggest difference.

Can we try it before committing?

For US projects, rental and pilot modules may be available so you can test on your own wastewater.

Can your membranes go into our existing tank?

Often, yes. Replacement flat-sheet membranes fit many existing cassettes; send us drawings and we will check fit.

Mild backwash (special cases only)
Backwashing is not a standard Swing operating mode and is not meant for routine use. Swing has been pressure-tested to 14.5 psi (1 bar) and held without breaking. If a site is in a bind even after relaxation and CIP, contact us; we may be able to work out a special mild-backwash procedure.

Take a community of 800 people at about 79,252 gpd (300 m³/day):

Tips for a smooth project

  • Plan for peaks from batch and cleaning discharges
  • Size equalization and pH control generously
  • Keep fats, lint and solids upstream of the membrane tank
  • Use pilot data to choose design flux

Next step

Industrial and special-purpose plants vary widely, so every first conversation starts with fact-finding. A few weeks of flow and lab data, even rough, makes our recommendation far more reliable. Where questions remain, a pilot or a measured first phase is a good way forward.

Sizing considerations

To give a useful recommendation we usually need:

  • Population and growth
  • Access and shipping route
  • Coldest temperatures
  • Existing plant and its issues
  • Operator staffing

Frequently asked questions

Can local operators run an MBR?

Yes, with training and clear procedures; we provide guidance material.

How many spares should we stock?

It depends on plant size; we will recommend a starting set.

Do you ship to remote communities?

Yes, to the nearest freight point.

Are rentals available?

Rentals are for US projects; purchases ship to Canada.

Can the plant be monitored remotely?

Remote monitoring is common and helps experienced staff support local operators.

What if a cartridge fails in winter?

With spares on site, a cartridge can be swapped without waiting for shipment.
