Wastewater treatment for hotels and resorts

Resorts, golf communities and hotels outside sewer service need treatment that is compact, quiet, odor-free and able to swing from off-season to full house. Many also want irrigation water.

Design around occupancy

Flow can vary several-fold between seasons and between weekdays and weekends. Equalization, multiple trains and an MBR that can turn down without losing biology help. Kitchens add FOG, and laundries add lint and detergents, so screening and grease management matter.

Swing MBR module render, single section
A Swing module: standard cartridges sized to your flow, with room to add more as demand grows. See the Swing MBR page.

Why MBR suits hospitality

MBR plants are compact and can be enclosed and landscaped. Filtrate is low in solids and suits disinfection for irrigation of grounds and golf courses, which can cut water bills, subject to local reuse rules. Seasonal sites can rent extra modules for peak months; see MBR rental.

Low-maintenance membranes

Hospitality plants are often run by contract operators who visit part-time. Swing cartridges are easy to inspect and swap, and our flat-sheet membranes are built to be robust. Related: building water reuse.

What operators look for

Operators at a hotel or resort usually want the same things: effluent that consistently meets discharge or reuse limits, solids separation that does not depend on how well sludge settles, and predictable sewer charges. The feed usually carries domestic sewage with kitchen grease and laundry detergents, and the system has to cope with weekend and holiday peaks, then quiet off-seasons. With membranes, they also look for durable sheets, easy inspection and replacement on a schedule they can plan.

  • Consistent, permit-ready effluent
  • Manageable cleaning routines
  • Planned, predictable membrane replacement
  • A compact footprint

How flat-sheet MBR can help

A membrane bioreactor replaces the clarifier with a physical barrier, so effluent quality depends far less on how well the sludge settles. That can make a hotel or resort system more forgiving of weekend and holiday peaks, then quiet off-seasons. Flat-sheet modules are generally easy to inspect, clean in place and handle without special tools.

Zyramic modules are built around three durability choices. Smaller membrane sheets flex less in service, which can mean less wear, and a damaged sheet takes less area out of service. Strong wide membrane welds are designed to resist delamination. A thick membrane, about 250 microns including support, is meant to stand up to solids and handling. Actual life and flux depend on pretreatment, design and operation, so we size each project individually.

More questions owners ask

Is an MBR hard to run at a hotel or resort?

Most operators find a well-designed MBR manageable with routine checks and periodic cleaning. Good screening and equalization upstream make the biggest difference.

Can we try it before committing?

For US projects, rental and pilot modules may be available so you can test on your own wastewater.

Can your membranes go into our existing tank?

Often, yes. Replacement flat-sheet membranes fit many existing cassettes; send us drawings and we will check fit.

Mild backwash (special cases only)
Backwashing is not a standard Swing operating mode and is not meant for routine use. Swing has been pressure-tested to 14.5 psi (1 bar) and held without breaking. If a site is in a bind even after relaxation and CIP, contact us; we may be able to work out a special mild-backwash procedure.

Worked sizing example

Take a 300-room resort averaging 39,626 gpd (150 m³/day) in high season:

Tips for a smooth project

  • Plan for peaks from batch and cleaning discharges
  • Size equalization and pH control generously
  • Keep fats, lint and solids upstream of the membrane tank
  • Use pilot data to choose design flux

Next step

Industrial and special-purpose plants vary widely, so every first conversation starts with fact-finding. A few weeks of flow and lab data, even rough, makes our recommendation far more reliable. Where questions remain, a pilot or a measured first phase is a good way forward.

Sizing considerations

To give a useful recommendation we usually need:

  • Rooms, occupancy pattern and amenities
  • Peak and off-season flows
  • Discharge or irrigation goals
  • Available space
  • Operator arrangement

Frequently asked questions

Can an MBR plant be odor-free?

Well-designed, covered plants with proper ventilation can minimize odor.

Can we irrigate with the effluent?

Often, after disinfection and approval.

Can we rent for high season?

US resorts can rent modules.

Do you supply complete plants?

We supply membranes; we can refer you to builders.

How much space does a resort plant need?

It depends on flow, but MBR is typically among the most compact options.

Can existing package plants be upgraded?

Often, by adding membranes or replacing worn ones.
