Brewery and beverage wastewater treatment with MBR

Breweries discharge strong, warm, variable wastewater full of sugars, yeast and cleaning chemicals. Many face rising sewer surcharges or local limits. A membrane bioreactor can treat that stream on site to a level suitable for discharge or, with further treatment, reuse.

What makes brewery wastewater hard

Brewery effluent can carry BOD many times stronger than domestic sewage, with sharp pH swings from caustic and acid cleaning, spent yeast and trub, and big daily and weekly flow peaks around brewing and packaging. Nutrient balance can also be off, with little nitrogen relative to carbon. Conventional clarifiers struggle with the bulking sludge that sugary feeds tend to produce.

How MBR helps

Because the membrane separates solids regardless of settleability, an MBR is not knocked over by filamentous bulking. It handles high MLSS, so a compact tank can absorb strong loads. The low-solids filtrate can usually meet sewer limits directly and is a strong feed for reverse osmosis if the brewery wants to reuse water for cleaning or utilities. Equalization and pH control ahead of the bioreactor are essential, as is removing spent grain and yeast at the source.

Options for breweries of different sizes

Larger breweries often add more equalization and pretreatment ahead of the MBR. Craft breweries often start with an aerobic MBR sized for current production with room to add modules. US breweries can rent modules to prove performance before buying.

What operators look for

Operators at a brewery usually want the same things: effluent that consistently meets discharge or reuse limits, solids separation that does not depend on how well sludge settles, and predictable sewer charges. The feed usually carries yeast, spent grain fines and sugary rinse water, and the system has to cope with pH swings from caustic and acid CIP and big surges on packaging days. With membranes, they also look for durable sheets, easy inspection and replacement on a schedule they can plan.

  • Consistent, permit-ready effluent
  • Manageable cleaning routines
  • Planned, predictable membrane replacement
  • A compact footprint

How flat-sheet MBR can help

A membrane bioreactor replaces the clarifier with a physical barrier, so effluent quality depends far less on how well the sludge settles. That can make a brewery system more forgiving of pH swings from caustic and acid CIP and big surges on packaging days. Flat-sheet modules are generally easy to inspect, clean in place and handle without special tools.

Zyramic modules are built around three durability choices. Smaller membrane sheets flex less in service, which can mean less wear, and a damaged sheet takes less area out of service. Strong wide membrane welds are designed to resist delamination. A thick membrane, about 250 microns including support, is meant to stand up to solids and handling. Actual life and flux depend on pretreatment, design and operation, so we size each project individually.

More questions owners ask

Is an MBR hard to run at a brewery?

Most operators find a well-designed MBR manageable with routine checks and periodic cleaning. Good screening and equalization upstream make the biggest difference.

Can we try it before committing?

For US projects, rental and pilot modules may be available so you can test on your own wastewater.

Can your membranes go into our existing tank?

Often, yes. Replacement flat-sheet membranes fit many existing cassettes; send us drawings and we will check fit.

Mild backwash (special cases only)
Backwashing is not a standard Swing operating mode and is not meant for routine use. Swing has been pressure-tested to 14.5 psi (1 bar) and held without breaking. If a site is in a bind even after relaxation and CIP, contact us; we may be able to work out a special mild-backwash procedure.

Worked sizing example

Take a regional brewery discharging 39,626 gpd (150 m³/day) after equalization:

This is an illustration only; a real design also checks temperature, MLSS, redundancy and the cleaning schedule.

Tips for a smooth project

  • Size for peak hour as well as average flow
  • Invest in good fine screening up front
  • Use temperature-corrected flux for cold-weather design
  • Plan lifting access so modules come out easily

Next step

Most projects start with a short call or an email with flows and a sketch. We send back a preliminary module layout and a quote, then refine it with your engineer once the process design is firm. If you are still comparing processes, we'll help you choose the right approach for your site.

Sizing considerations

To give a useful recommendation we usually need:

  • Production volume and brewing schedule
  • BOD/COD, TSS, pH and temperature profile
  • Current sewer surcharges and limits
  • Space for equalization and pH adjustment
  • Interest in water reuse

Frequently asked questions

Can an MBR handle brewery cleaning chemicals?

With equalization and pH neutralization ahead of it, yes in most cases. Large uncontrolled slugs can upset any biological process.

Can treatment reduce sewer surcharges?

It depends on local rates and load. We can help you gather the numbers for your own evaluation.

Is a pilot possible?

Yes, US breweries can rent modules for a pilot.

Does this apply to wineries, distilleries and soft drinks?

Yes, the same principles apply to other beverage plants, with adjustments for each stream.

How big a tank does a brewery MBR need?

It depends on load more than flow. Strong brewery wastewater can need a larger bioreactor than its volume suggests, so we size on BOD load as well as flow.

Can spent yeast go to the treatment plant?

It is better kept out. Recovering yeast, trub and spent grain at the source can cut the treatment load dramatically.
